America’s private, for-profit healthcare system is not delivering good results for working people. Over 27 million Americans lack health insurance, including 3.5 million children. The American people are saddled with over 220 billion dollars of medical debt, and this continues to be the leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States. 68,000 people die in our country every year due to the insidious tactics insurance companies use to avoid paying for essential care, including stretching out the claims process as much as possible for people with urgent medical needs and using artificial intelligence as a tool to automatically deny large numbers of claims.

Under a for-profit healthcare system, health insurance companies are directly incentivized to maximize profit by denying as many claims as possible. Thus, the best solution to these problems is to build a healthcare system not based on private profit but on public welfare. Drew Cox will fight to pass the Medicare for all Act to guarantee healthcare to all Americans not as a commodity but as a human right. This must include mental healthcare and reproductive healthcare. He will also push for legislation to place stringent regulations on how much pharmaceutical companies can charge for essential medications.
